‘Caught in the Web’

Moving image, sound design, animation and video editing, 2019.

With the original installation to be projected at St Peter’s Library, Brighton, this piece explored online consumerism and the nature of digital information overload, within a quiet space surrounded by knowledgeable material, whilst being surrounded by rows and rows of intellectual, knowledgable and cultivated books.

Later adapted into an online version during the first UK lockdown, the 7-screen project took on new meaning. With public spaces unavailable, the claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in a digital world became not only a concept, but a lived experience

Development

I explored the concept of technology, the online world, and ‘influential’ material. These elements can have an impact on us, which I also wanted to highlight within my installation. Focusing beyond the usual gallery and blacked out screen space, and unable to access university and public indoor spaces during the peak of the pandemic, I decided to delve into the online digital world.

I worked with multiple Adobe software, these being Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effect, Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe Audition. Creating and digitally illustrating, using my laptop mouse trackpad, and produce three 2D animations. I was also able to revisit Adobe audition, and replicate the noises we are accustomed to within a library space.
